Anyone with an interest in construction who didn’t get to UK Construction Week really missed a trick. Combining seven great trade shows and with Grand Designs Live just next door, the exhibition shows off the entire construction industry, from building the foundations right through to finishing the interiors.

I have a particularly special interest at the moment, as Sarah & I are 10 months into our self-build, No.41 but there really is something for everyone. Architects, designers, contractors, builders, installers, joiners, HVAC engineers — whatever your focus, UK Construction Week doesn’t just give you the latest on your sector, it also gives you the opportunity to see what’s going on elsewhere.

This was proven to us with the success of the PiGS Pavilion that was organised by Balls2 Marketing. Ten companies from the industry took a podium to show the wider construction industry what glazing is all about. And we had a phenomenal response.

From builders and large developers to builder’s merchants and specifiers, visitors had a genuine interest in what went into the windows, doors and glazing systems that they are specifying and fitting in their projects. It proves how important the glazing industry is to construction.

As well as products and services there were some great seminars and discussions on the state of construction, with a real focus on skills and diversity – both issues that the glazing industry has been focused on. It was great to see lots of young people from local schools and colleges had been invited to the show – perhaps that’s an idea the glazing industry can make more of so that we can attract some fresh talent to glazing too.

Sometimes looking outside the box and learning from the wider industry context can really fuel ideas and help to shape new strategies for businesses. And that’s why making time for shows is so good for us and our clients.
